Why Women in Business Need Business Friends, Not Just Business Contacts
When I first started working for myself, one of the things I wasn’t prepared for was how lonely running a business could feel.
I was building websites from my desk, working with beautiful clients and creating a business I genuinely loved. But there was no one sitting beside me to bounce an idea off. No colleague saying, “Come on, you’ve been staring at that screen for four hours. Let’s go get a coffee.”
There was no team meeting, lunchroom conversation or person nearby who understood why something as simple as receiving a lovely client email could completely make my day.
It was just me.
And I think this is something we don’t talk about enough when we talk about women in business.
We talk about marketing, money, goals, growth, visibility and strategy.
But we don’t talk nearly enough about how much easier business becomes when you have people around you who understand the journey you’re on.
Networking isn’t the same as belonging
Traditional business networking can often feel centred around exchanging details, delivering the perfect introduction and working out who in the room might become a client.
And there is absolutely a place for making new business connections.
But connection and networking aren’t necessarily the same thing.
You can attend a room full of fifty people, collect ten business cards and still go home feeling completely alone.
What many women are actually looking for isn’t another contact.
We’re looking for people we can know.
Women we can message and say, “Can I run something past you?”
Women who celebrate when something finally works.
Women who understand when business feels hard.
Women who will tell us about an opportunity because they immediately thought of us.
Women we trust enough to talk honestly with about what we are trying to create.
That is something much deeper than networking.
That is community.

Business friends see the parts other people don’t
Your friends and family might love and support you enormously, but unless they are building something themselves, it can sometimes be difficult for them to understand what running a business actually feels like.
They may not understand why you are excited about finally getting your website live.
Why changing your pricing has kept you awake for three nights.
Why posting a video of yourself online felt like a monumental act of courage.
Why one quiet month can make you question everything.
Or why an idea that exists only inside your head can feel incredibly real to you.
Business friends understand these moments because they are living versions of them too.
You don’t have to explain the whole backstory.
They just get it.
And sometimes simply being able to say something out loud to another woman who understands is enough to help you work out your next step.
Why as women in business, we need people who can see what we can’t
One of the hardest things about working for yourself is that you are often trying to be the visionary, the strategist, the marketer, the decision maker and the person doing the actual work.
All at once.
It is very easy to become so close to your own business that you can no longer see it clearly. This is where having the right women around you becomes incredibly valuable.
Someone else might recognise an opportunity you have overlooked.
They might remind you of an idea you talked about six months ago.
They might notice that you light up every time you talk about one particular part of your work.
Or they might simply ask a question that makes everything click into place.
Not because they are there to fix your business for you.
But because sometimes we find our own answers more easily when we have somewhere safe to explore them.
And perhaps that’s the piece of business growth we don’t talk about enough.
Sometimes we don’t need another strategy.
Sometimes we just need our people.
